How Should I Spend My Time on This Earth

After watching, An Inconvenient Truth, I was ready to change my whole life. I even started looking into graduate programs at the Institute for Study of Planet Earth focusing on Global Change.

Al "I used to be the next President of the United States of America" Gore, really inspired me beyond expectation. I never thought he was very charismatic but apparently I never heard him speak about something he was so passionate about.

Well, I don't know if I'll go as far as getting my PhD and save the planet but I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy a Hybrid car when I get back to the States. and take shorter showers. and buy compact flourescent lightbulbs.

Are you going to kill me now?
No. I killed you ten minutes ago

just one of the great quotes from V for Vendetta

  • I, like god, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence.
  • The only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain.
  • There is no such thing as coincidence, just the illusion of coincidence.
  • People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.
  • Beneath this mask there is more than flesh, there is an idea...and ideas are bulletproof.

what an absolutely great movie. I wasn't really sure what it was about but it looked intriguing from the previews and posters. Me and The Cowboy were really taken aback by this film.  He has proclaimed it to be his new favorite.

From beginning to end, you are completely captivated with the story, the characters, the cinematography - just absolutely everything.

...I must say it is nothing short of uniquely brilliant. Entertaining from the start, V manages to combine a strong socio-political message in a compact and highly intense experience. Infused with issues and concepts that pervade in the global political climate of our times, this movie is endowed with a tremendous timely relevance that belies its trappings as a mere action adventure.

The acting, the cinematography, the effects, and the general vision of this film all lead me to believe that it will likely receive a cult following...

Love is a burning thing

Saw Walk the Line the other night.  really good  movie.

and The Cowboy gave me the sweetest compliment tonight, he said that Reese Witherspoon as June Carter reminded him of me.  Sweet talkin' silver tongued devil    ;-)

boyish idealism

saw Green Street Hooligans tonight.

overall a good movie - cute guys, sexy bad boy Brit accents, Elijah Wood was bearable, good cinematography during the fight scenes, more than slightly predictable plot and character revelations though.

only real problem, I see this as a movie that will make young men who find themselves a little lost or not quite sure of their place in life yet to look at these hooligan firms as something that would want to be part of.  it's an advertisment to join a gang.  you know the it don't matter if you end up dead, you were part of something bigger mentality.

I guess I will never understand the need for something like that.  Just makes me realize that there is one thing that I can always count on, my ability to believe in myself no matter what the rest of the world might do to me.

I say just buck up and be a Man!

you know the weather is getting colder

so the annual event of catching up on my movies has begun.

Sunday afternoon, The Cowboy and I went to see Elizabethtown at the theatre in Cascais and then we rented Spanglish to round off the evening.

Tonight's plan includes seeing Chicken Little at a theatre in Lisbon
and finally the grand daddy highlight of our movie filled week

Drums_002

on Thanksgiving evening, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in Cascais. Pre-sale tickets already in hand.  I can't even remember the last time I didn't go see a movie on Thanksgiving night.

...best served cold

  • What is your favorite…
    • Movie of all time - I have many favorites but for all time it is a tie – Deer Hunter and  Apocalpse Now. I don't know why but both of those movies really moved me like no others.
    • Action Movie – Die Hard
    • Suspense/Horror -
    • Love Movie -
    • Drama/Human Interest Movie -
    • Favorite Foreign Film – Le Pacte des loups (Brotherhood of theWolf)
    • Actor – Christopher Walken
    • Actress - Cate Blanchett
    • If you could have one night with the actor/actress of your choice -  who would it be? Johnny  Depp
    • What actor and/or actress bothers you?  Why?  (for example - I cannot fathom why people like Juila Roberts....a total mystery to me...) too many to remember really, let’s give it a shot, uh, Nicole Kidman, Gwenyth Paltrow, Renee Zellweger, ... the list could go on and on and on….
    • Richard Gere - creepy and narcissistic or just plain old creepy? just plain old creepy
    • What movie would you like to see redone?  What movie should never be redone? Can’t really think of one that I would want redone. Most movies should never have been made in the first place, for god’s sake don’t remake them or worse, make sequels.
    • What book or author would make for a fantastic movie? No sure but probably many that I haven’t read yet.
    • 007: Which one do you prefer and why? Sean Connery, he’s classic like a Chanel.
    • Animal House or Blues Brothers? Definitely Animal House
    • Do you like to watch old black and white movies from time to time?  What circumstances prompt you to watch them? I love watching b&w movies, usually when I’m feeling rather nostalgic about life and want to go somewhere even more enchanting than my own life. Citizen Kane is one of my many many favorite movies.
    • Favorite Hitchcock movie?  Nope, not a fan of Hitchcock.
    • Best movie date experience? Can’t remember the movie(s) but it was my first drive-in (and we only watched the movies).
    • If you could star in one movie - what would it be?  You get to play the lead perfectly with no problems and enjoy the same glory as the person who originally did it? Beatrix Kiddo aka Black Mamba aka The Bride from Kill Bill: Vol. 2 - cuz "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

    summer of beginnings

    my night, my night

After deciding to not spend another Saturday night at home, I did what any singleton would do – I went to movies, alone, on date night. My options were pretty limited so Batman Begins it was.

Not sure how busy it might be, I headed out early so that I could see another if BB was sold out. Luck on my side, got my ticket and off to the bar I went to have a cocktail before the show. My regular pre-show spot, Buena Vista, served up the most lovely Tequila Sunrise.

    ~tangent~

while enjoying my TS, I started flipping through my mobile and came across a phone number that I have saved in the memory, a german mobile number tagged as Robert. I was baffled who’s number this could be. I don’t remember anyone named Robert from germany? There was Swedish Robert but I knew I didn’t save his number. And since the beginning of the year I’ve been so busy with work that I haven’t even considered trying to meet anyone new, so who could this character be? Was the number on the phone that I inherited? No, I’m sure I cleared all numbers when I got it. I considered sending a TM to somehow, tactfully, find out who this was but graciously decided against it. When all of the sudden it dawned on me – Robert was a guy I met once in a neighborhood bar, Yours, back in January or February when I used to go all the time with my GF, Ken. Let me explain, it’s not as bad as it sounds.

Yours is the American Sports bar in my neighborhood [you know, that’s where I watched the SuperBowl in the middle of the night] and being such, lots of Americans go there. One evening, Ken and I were sitting at the bar and as usual, Ken was ready to leave before me so I stayed and ended up talking with the young man that was sitting next to me. He’s studying or working at the university here in Frankfurt, something really tough like astrophysics or rocket science, and anyway, somehow I ended up mentioning that I speak Polish (probably because I always feel like I have to justify why I won’t speak german). Just so happens he has some Polish in his background too and asked if I’d help him learn some so he could call a relative he still has over there. So I said sure and we exchanged numbers. I didn’t think about again.

    Mystery Solved!

    ~end tangent~

So I finished my TS and to the cinema I went. Big theatre, not many people - so I got an ideal seat. Now about the movie: Let me tell you, Christian Bale looks great wearing a harness, hell he’d look great wearing nothing at all. < hmm, imagination hard at work >

So story was good; answered all those nagging questions about the bat cave, where he got the cool car and why bats; you know, important daunting questions that keeps one up at night. Not sure I liked Alfred’s attitude in this movie, he was just too familiar with Bruce; not that uptight, formal butler that I am used to (Michael Caine is always likable though). The villain, too realistic not so comic book, like Joker or Riddler. And the girl, well her acting is just bad, same as that horrible show she was on. Luckily, she didn’t have a lot of dialogue but true to form of actresses that can’t act (well, any actress really), she did get the gratuitous nipples blazing scene. It was so pathetic, she had to be tweaking, there was no way it was THAT cold.

And the end was a perfect set up for the next movie (which we’ve already seen). So now between Star Wars and this movie, I’ve had enough of the prequels. I would like to see something new and original.

Then I needed to get home. The movie ended at 1:45 and the last u-bahn home left at 1:35 so I figure I’ll just catch a cab. I start walking in the direction of home along a street that I know has a lot of taxi traffic but no luck, I ended up walking all the way home. Actually, it was quite nice. It wasn’t hot out since the rain cooled things down and the city was still buzzing so it wasn’t any different than walking home during the day. The only danger though at night is that you can’t see when someone hasn’t cleaned up after their dog – but I was very, very careful.

    flowers that fester

Flowers_that_festernow that Germany has finally decided to have weather in sync with the date, in the 30's (80's F) for several consecutive days, the blossoms in the fields are starting to die off.

with this occurrence comes the pungent odor that signals through the senses the coming of summer [there is one tree in particular that has a unique smell that I love but can't remember which tree it is].  it is one of those intangible qualities that sends my thoughts to memories of warm fun filled evenings that last until the wee hours of the night.

    :: nostaglic tangent ::
this is my favorite movie quote.  ah, Little Darlings, one of my favorite movies of all time, probably the first movie that made an impact on me.

Oh, that time between innocence and becoming a "Woman" seemed so far away [i was only twelve]. Kristy McNichol was my faaaavorite actress (i so wanted to be her), Matt Dillon was so cool (as i got older, i preferred Armand Assante), and Ferris and Angel had boobs!something i was praying to God for nightly.

eventually, i got boobs, started smoking, became a Woman but never went to camp (always blamed my parents for stunting my personal *and sexual* growth because of it). unfortunately, i never got Matt Dillon nor Armand Assante either. cà la vie
